How Gender and Gender Bias Affect Your Recovery

Please join award-winning author Marya Hornbacher for this lively and fascinating look at the effects of gender and gender bias in the recovery community—and how we can detach from unhealthy or unhelpful dynamics.

Gender is a core part of identity, and whether we realize it or not, it shapes our perceptions of self and others. The recovery community is no exception: from the earliest Twelve Step literature to present-day meetings, gender roles play their part, quietly dictating how we perceive and interact with others. What can we do about it?

Hornbacher will address a number of ways in which gender and recovery intersect, including:

  • Our own conscious and unconscious assumptions about gender roles, and how those may be influencing our choices, behaviors and beliefs in recovery

  • How gender and gender bias can affect our interactions in recovery, and how we can detach from unhealthy dynamics without losing access to the valuable insights and fellowship the recovery community provides

  • Ways in which we can make recovery more accessible to newcomers and more effective for ourselves by learning about gender bias and moving toward a more equitable recovery for all
